‘Knock on the door’ warning to a killer
Police pledge to hunt down evil fugitive who drowned mother.
April 9th 1999
A CORONER today issued a haunting warning to the killer of single mum Pat Grainger.
Chris Dorries warned the fugitive: “One day the evidence will be there, the police will come for them.
In the meantime whoever did this dreadful deed will have to wonder whenever there is a knock on the door whether today is the day.”
Patricia, known affectionately as ‘Little Pat’ on Sheffield’s Parson Cross estate where she grew up, was found murdered in the summer of 1997.
An inquest into the brutal killing today heard inquiries resulted in a man being charged with Pat’s murder but the case collapsed.
Detectives have pledged to keep up the hunt for her killer.
Det Insp Chris Wallace said: “I’m in absolutely no doubt. Patricia was murdered. I would urge those individuals who do have any information, regardless of how minor it may seem, to come forward.”
The inquest was told Pat’s bruised and battered body was found dumped in a shallow brook near her family home.
She had been stabbed four times in the neck, strangled and drowned in the stream. Partially deaf, Pat was 25 years old but had a mental age of about 10.
She was described in court by Mr Wallace as “a loving girl, a caring girl” who was well known round the Buchanan Road home she shared with son Danny, now six, mum Mina and stepdad Roy Wright.
Leaving the hearing, Roy said: “I feel better now this part has been brought to a close. The quicker her killer is picked up the better I’ll take it.”
Coroner Mr Dorries recorded a verdict of unlawful killing.
